Duke Farms × The Climate Toolkit

Waste

Our materials work connects reuse, composting, purchasing, vendors, and events. The goal is to reduce waste before materials reach the campus and keep recoverable materials in use afterward.

Our alignment & progress

“Achieved” is supported by Duke Farms program records or explicit completion reported by the Climate Toolkit’s Duke Farms profile, as explained for each goal. Source dates identify the period covered; they do not imply a new audit. “Not yet verified” means the reviewed evidence does not establish achievement; it does not mean no work is happening.

01 / Toolkit goal

Not yet verified

Eliminate single-use plastics across all operations

How Duke Farms aligns
Coordinate responsible procurement and vendor expectations with waste reduction.
Progress & evidence
Complete elimination across food service, horticulture, retail, and other operations is not documented by the reviewed sources.

Not yet verified

Compost 100% of food waste

How Duke Farms aligns
Use composting within coordinated food and materials management; the Green Team works on improving Café food-waste diversion.
Progress & evidence
The Toolkit profile reports completion, but the May 2025 Green Team charter proposed a target of diverting at least 75% of Café food waste. This does not establish campus-wide 100% composting. A newer measured result is needed to reconcile the reporting.

03 / Toolkit goal

Not yet verified

End the sale and use of bottled water

How Duke Farms aligns
Align food service and events with waste-prevention practices.
Progress & evidence
The Toolkit lists this as planned by the end of 2025. No newer evidence establishes completion; a passed target date is not confirmation.

Recycle or reuse all recyclable metals, glass, and plastics

How Duke Farms aligns
The Green Team has worked on collection practices to improve recycling outcomes.
Progress & evidence
The Toolkit profile reports completion. However, a May 14, 2025 operational agenda identified a collection problem preventing bagged recyclables from being recycled. That dated record does not establish today's situation, and no newer resolution was verified. Completion needs current confirmation.
